A French dinner party theme - your French bistro at home

Remember when you are doing a French dinner party theme or any of our theme dinner ideas, you don’t need to spend a lot of money or get a lot of extra stuff. A few key items will set the theme for your company.

Dressing for a French dinner party bistro-style

Tell your guests to put on their jeans and their sexiest black turtlenecks for your bistro-style evening. Maybe the women might like to put on a little extra mascara or eyeliner too. If it’s a little much that will just add to the fun.

French dinner music and candles

Everyone recognizes Edith Piaf as the ultimate French chanteuse. Candles flickering in the hallway, and Piaf singing when your guests arrive is a foolproof way of setting the French mood.

Choosing and serving wine

bread, wine and cheese Of course you will choose a French bordeaux or burgundy, n’est-ce-pas?.

If you’re not sure what to get, tell the wine store staff about your bistro theme and that your main course will be steak frites (steak with French fries).

Small tumblers are fine for wine glasses if you want since they are a staple of French bistros.

But by all means use your regular wine glasses if you prefer.

Table setting basics for a French dinner party bistro-style

Simple flowers like a single bud in a vase or a couple of spring flowers.

Nothing fancy, remember this is a bistro dinner mood, not a 5 star restaurant. A tablecloth and napkins in a rough cotton are suitable for tonight’s dinner.

Add some votive lights and your regular china, and voila! Your table setting basics are complete.

French dinner party Menu

Steak Frites Do you have a blackboard at your house? If you do, why not prop it up somewhere your guests can see, and write your menu on it. Instant atmosphere!

As for the menu, simplicity itself!

Make ahead appetizers
Buy a pate or two, add a baguette and you have instant French style.

Add a vegetable tray for people who prefer to keep the calories down.

Entrée

Steak frites is a perfect choice Serve a smaller piece of steak like a filet mignon. Surround it with crisp fries and some green beans. Bring the rest of the baguette to the table

Dessert
Pick up a few French pastries or a mocha cake at the bakery

Or if you prefer, what could be more French than a cheese tray? You and your guests can linger over the last of the wine as you enjoy your cheese.

Bon appetit!
