How This Website Was Born

Giving dinner parties was always something I loved doing. But over time I noticed that it was becoming harder and harder. I’m single again now, the mother of grown-up children. So a lot of the time I rely on myself to do most or all of the work involved in giving a dinner party.
A full work life and a long commute from my Markham Ontario (Canada) workplace to my Toronto home cut into the available time in the evenings.
I noticed that I really wasn’t getting an awful lot better at it. In fact sometimes I thought I was getting worse.
Overall, I was still winging it instead of trying to approach a dinner party systematically.
This last point really struck me. We’re all used to seeing plenty of books and ads for organizing our closets, our kitchens, garages, home offices and so on. So why not apply the organizing concept to a dinner party?
Now I don’t know about you but I need help from experts to get and stay organized. (Luckily I have a close friend who is this kind of expert.)
So it occurred to me that it made equal sense to go out and ask the dinner party planning experts for their tips and advice on all the aspects of a dinner party. I could talk to flower arrangers, table setting experts, cooks who specialize in make-ahead, elegant dishes, wine experts and more. I could read their books and try out their ideas. Then I could gather the information together into one central, reliable website resource, and offer it to people who wanted to give great dinner parties.
And that’s how this website was born.
You may notice as you read through it that sometimes I refer to “I” and sometimes I refer to “we”. That’s because I’m the main person who does the website. But I rely heavily on a group of friends. They read and comment and bring me back to reality when I go off the sensible and realistic path. There are two especially who are really helpful. One can’t cook at all, so she lets me know when I expect too much of the reader. The other is a more experienced hostess, so she has lots of great tips to offer.
And that leads me to the final thing – in the long run, you, the readers, are going to be the best source of tips and advice. Hundreds of great ideas and suggestions live in your minds. I hope very much you will share some of them with me so I can share them with our other readers. Together we can get smarter about giving great dinner parties - parties that both our guest and we ourselves can enjoy.
